Meal planning is a great way to save money on groceries. By planning your meals the day before a weekly or monthly shopping trip, you’ll enter the grocery store with list of the things your family needs to make nutritious, colorful meals. Not to mention – by planning in advance and buying only the ingredients you need, you’ll save time preparing your meals too!

You may tend to buy frozen meals because they are convenient, cheap and fast. But if you are going to buy frozen food, here’s how you can still find some healthier options:

  • Look for products with similar amounts of protein and carbs. Protein helps you feel full longer, while carbs are digested quickly and will leave you feeling hungry sooner.
  • Look for meals with about 250 to 400 calories. That’s a good amount for most people, but changes depending on size, activity and more.
  • Check the ingredient list and looking for whole grain pasta and brown rice (or no starch at all, just protein and veggies).
  • If you already have some unhealthy frozen meals, increase nutritional value by eating a protein-rich snack with it, like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese or a hard-boiled egg.
